Livestock producers have worked around the clock to move livestock from the storms flood waters. At this time, the cattle that have survived the storm and the flooding have made it to higher ground. But, with salt water mixing with fresh flood water the cattle are left with undrinkable brackish water. Ranchers are looking for multiple resources to water and feed their stranded livestock. Spring Wheat Harvest in the Gallatin Valley

On Monday, the latest weekly USDA crop progress report was released and once again the report remains bullish for spring wheat. Across the nation, 40% of spring wheat was harvested, down from 45% a year ago, but above the five-year average of 35% harvested. 33% of spring wheat was rated good-to-excellent, up 1 percentage point from 32% the previous week. Also 97% of winter wheat had been harvested as of Sunday. For Montana specially, 92% of the winter wheat is in the bin while 39% of the spring wheat crop has been harvested and 57% of the barley crop has been cut as well. >> Read More

Proposed Restriction of Imports of Mexican Cattle To Montana

The Montana Department of Livestock is proposing an amendment to an existing state law regarding the importation of cattle from Mexico. Concern over Bovine Tuberculosis was raised during the 2017 Montana Legislature over TB cases found in herds in South Dakota and Canada. Those positive TB cases not only caused huge economic loss and stress for producers and communities but witnessed the disposal of cattle herds and lengthy quarantines of ranches for months on end.  The legislature ran out of time to address the issue before the session ended. >> Read More
