83rd SD Sheep Growers Annual Convention

The 83rd South Dakota Sheep Growers Association annual convention will be held September 25th & 26th in Spearfish, SD, at the Holiday Inn.

An agenda and tour will be announced soon.

Friday afternoon will feature a half-day tour where we will first travel to Sturgis Meats. See a small scale livestock processing facility and discuss the emerging direct meat sales movement. We will then be spending some time at the Newell Sheep Yards where we will see one of the largest sheep sale barns in the country. In addition, we have invited numerous sheep equipment companies to have displays on site. We will then travel to the Boylan Ranch north of Newell, where we will have multiple education stations that will include sheep technology advances, demonstrations on snaring, and how the Boylan family have diversified their operation to meet tourism demands. We will have an evening lamb BBQ and cash bar.
Saturday SDSGA convention sessions will focus on current sheep and lamb industry issues, market trends and a special lamb marketing panel discussion that will include stakeholders from niche and direct marketing to large scale lamb processing. A representative from the new Colorado Lamb Processors will take us on a virtual tour of the facility. We will be meeting the new SDSU campus Extension Sheep Specialist and the new Extension Sheep Field Speicalist. Saturday evening will culminate with the lamb banquet featuring rack of lamb, where annual awards are presented, including the state “Make It With Wool” winners.
