30 Days. 20 Years Old. 9 Countries.

by

Gone for a month.  Visiting nine countries.  At the age of 20, Karoline Rose of Three Forks has had an experience that few will ever have.  Thanks to donations from family and friends, she was able to gain a world perspective on agriculture.  She brings that perspective back to the industry she was raised within and her college career at Montana State University.  At MSU, Karoline is co-President of the Collegiate Stockgrowers.

With nine countries on the itinerary, Karoline says most of her time was spent in Morocco, London, Uganda, and Israel.

When she spoke to Northern Ag Network this week, she said that an experience in a Ugandan hospital was one of the most memorable.

Unlike the disconnect between urban populations and agriculture often seen in developed countries, Karoline says agriculture was always evident where she visited.

Edwin, one of Karoline’s favorite children at the orphanage, is malnourished and has an ulcer on his leg. His mom is unable to care for him at this time but he will return once he has had surgery on his leg.

This is a typical village in Uganda. Most houses don’t have doors or windows and they all have dirt floors. Children who are not in school play outside while they parents either work in the village or take care of the babies.

This is a market on the side of the road. They neatly stack all the vegetables to make them look appealing. Karoline says they all are extremely cheap and taste wonderful!

Karoline worked with these three children for two weeks. They are all dressed up to go into town with them and get a soda.
