Sidney, Mont. — In a testament to the power of collaboration, the Montana Beef Council (MBC) and the North Dakota Beef Commission (NDBC) came together in Sidney, Montana, on Wednesday, April 30th, for two separate business meetings that focused on strengthening the beef industry and exploring new opportunities for growth.
The day kicked off with an informative joint overview of both organizations, followed by a detailed export market update presented by Annie Hennen of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, contractor to the Beef Checkoff. The session provided valuable insights into global market trends and opportunities for U.S. beef exports, a critical component of the industry’s success.
Following NDBC’s own business meeting and a shared lunch, the Montana Beef Council convened for its meeting, led by President Andy Kellom and Executive Director Chaley Harney. The meeting covered a range of important topics, including financial and investment updates, as well as key industry initiatives.
Agenda highlights included:
- Financial and Investment Insights: Budget Chair Travis Choat and Business Manager Sue Broyles provided a thorough financial report, highlighting the Council’s fiscal responsibility and strategic investments in programs that support the growth of the beef industry.
- USDA AMS Program Update: Kinley Hartman offered a comprehensive update on the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) programs.
- Officer and Committee Reports: Members of the executive team delivered updates on ongoing projects, initiatives, and upcoming challenges facing the industry, ensuring continued alignment with long-term goals.
- Industry Updates: Highlights included insights from Justin Iverson after the recent USMEF Market Expo Tour in Mexico, where U.S. beef was showcased to key international buyers.
The day was capped off with a joint board dinner, fostering strengthened relationships between the two councils and reinforcing their shared commitment to the growth of the beef industry in both states. The dinner provided an opportunity for board members to engage in open dialogue, share ideas, and celebrate the continued success of the beef industry.
The next in-person MBC board meeting is scheduled for August 28–29, 2025, in Billings, Montana, where discussions will continue on important initiatives and strategic directions for the coming year.
