BLM to Reconsider Rock Springs RMP

by Andy Schwab

Wyoming’s elected officials are welcoming news that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will revisit the controversial Rock Springs Resource Management Plan (RMP), which governs the use of more than 3.6 million acres in southwest Wyoming.

The BLM announced it will soon issue a Notice of Intent to amend the plan, offering a fresh round of public input. The move follows months of sharp criticism from state leaders who argued the Biden Administration’s version of the RMP prioritized conservation over long-standing multiple-use practices like grazing, mining, and energy development.

Congresswoman Harriet Hageman said the original plan represented “long-term economic harm” and violated federal land use law under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA). She emphasized the importance of protecting Wyoming’s legacy industries and ensuring local voices are heard during the amendment process.

Governor Mark Gordon also applauded the decision, calling the original plan “flawed” and praising the influence of recent executive and secretarial orders under the Trump Administration that spurred the review. Gordon said he remains confident the new process will be more responsive to Wyoming’s concerns.
