The Montana Hereford Association (MHA) held its annual fall tour this week, based out of Miles City with stops across eastern Montana and western North Dakota. More than 65 participants joined the tour, which highlighted prominent Hereford breeders in the region.
The event opened with a welcome dinner and presentation at Fort Keogh, followed by ranch visits including Tom Sparks in Plevna, Stuber Ranch and Mrnak Hereford Ranch in Bowman, ND, Baumgarten Herefords in Belfield, ND, Friedt Herefords in Molt, ND, and Stroh and Pelton Polled Herefords. The tour continued north to Plentywood’s J Bar E Ranch, one of Montana’s historic Hereford herds, before wrapping up at Beery’s Land and Livestock in Vida.
MHA President Eric Lawver reported strong optimism among attendees, noting positive cattle markets, demand for Hereford calves, and better-than-expected late-season grass conditions.
Looking ahead, the Hereford industry remains busy. Churchill Cattle Company will host its female dispersal later this week, and on October 17, MHA will hold its annual meeting in Billings. The meeting coincides with the World Hereford Tour and display pens at the Northern International Livestock Exposition, offering a rare opportunity for Montana Hereford producers to have their cattle viewed by international visitors.
