While a crazy swing of weather has again made our region home, last week allowed for some good and welcome movement in the fields. The progress reports below are based on numbers from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service offices in each state. The advancements that they document are as of this past Sunday. It is likely that some progress has been made since these numbers were accumulated.
Montana: Continued wet fields are hindering spring planting progress but many farmers are still planning on moving forward with spring plantings if the conditions allow in the next few weeks. Seventy-three percent of the projected spring wheat crop has now been planted. This is up 14 percentage points from the previous week and down from the 98{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} five-year average. Fifty percent of the crop has emerged compared to the average 92{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2}. Eighty-five percent of barley has been planted as has 96{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} of sugarbeets, 70{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} of oats, 65{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} of durum, 76{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} of corn and 82{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} of lentils. Winter wheat condition at 68{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} good-to-excellent is down slightly from last week but above average. Wyoming: Temperatures across the state remained mainly below normal; however, Wyoming’s first taste of summer growing conditions at the end of the week helped advance crop and rangeland grass growth. First cutting of alfalfa has just begun with good or better alfalfa condition up 4{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} compared to last week. The progress of all crops, except for barley planted, is running behind the 5-year average. Ninety-six percent of sugarbeets have been planted as has 76{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} of corn, 82{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} of oats and 78{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} of spring wheat. Only 30{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} of that spring wheat has emerged compared to the 5-year average of 75{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2}. North Dakota: Favorable planting and growing conditions for most of the week benefited crops statewide. Though many fields are still muddy, the warmer, dryer weather allowed farmers in most areas to make progress with spring fieldwork. Sixty-nine percent of spring wheat has now been planted compared to the five-year average of 97{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2}. Thirty-nine percent of that has emerged compared to the average 89{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2}. Only a quarter of the projected durum wheat acreage has been planted at a time when nearly all of the crop would normally be in the ground. South Dakota: Progress was made last week with 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork in the past seven days, many crops are inching closer to the previous years and 5-year averages. All spring wheat has been seeded. Ninety three percent of the crop has emerged. Ninety-three percent of corn has been planted as has 98{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} of barley. Sixty-eight percent of winter wheat is now in the boot stage and, as of last week, four percent of that crop has now headed. The crop is rated 77{dfeadfe70caf58f453a47791a362966239aaa64624c42b982d70b175f7e3dda2} good-to-excellent. This is one of the best ratings in the nation. View full report…
