Animal Cruelty Ballot Initiative Pops Up in ND

by

It now appears that this November, folks voting in the presidential election in the state of North Dakota, will also have before them a ballot initiative being backed in part by the Humane Society of the U.S.  It looks to increase the penalty for folks charged with animal cruelty in cases with dogs, cats, and horses.

Jason Schmidt, President of the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association, told Northern Ag Network just what was going on.

Jason says that the signatures are now being verified and as long as those are legitimate, the initiative will appear on the ballot this fall.

The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association is not the only agricultural industry group speaking out against the initiative.  The list also includes the North Dakota Farm Bureau, North Dakota Farmers Union, North Dakota Lamb & Wool Producers Association, North Dakota Pork Council, North Dakota Elk Growers, the Milk Producers Association of North Dakota and other animal stakeholders.

Jason explained why ag groups are stepping up to oppose the initiative.
