Colorado Woman Sentenced to Jail for Horse Abuse

by

Sherri Brunzell, 63, was sentenced Thursday after being found guilty of eight counts of animal abuse.  Several horses were found on her property last September malnourished and in poor condition, along with 14 horse carcasses.  The horses were estimated to be worth around $2 million when originally purchased making their treatment and condition even more shocking.

Brunzell was sentenced to 60 days in jail, a $4,000 fine and five years of probation. As a condition of her  probation Brunzell may not own, possess or care for any horses, llamas or other livestock.

The prosecution said they were pleased with the sentence as were several members of the community who showed up for the announcement, including C.T. Babcock, a former owner of Dual Peppy, who drove all the way up from Texas hoping to take the horse back home with him.

In addition, the judge ordered that Brunzell sell all the horses she owns. She also was ordered to complete 16 counseling sessions that focus on self awareness, stress and problem solving.
