OMAHA (DTN) — Forty-two percent of the nation's corn crop had reached maturity as of Sept. 21 and 7{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} of the crop had been harvested, according to USDA's latest weekly Crop Progress and Condition reports.
The maturity percentage rose 15 percentage points in the past week while harvest advanced 3 percentage points. The five-year average for maturity is 54{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} and for harvest is 15{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48}. Corn condition was basically unchanged at 74{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} good to excellent.
“USDA's good-to-excellent rating of 74{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} for corn resulted in a DTN Corn Condition Index of 181, which is up from 180 a week ago and still far above 131 a year ago and above the five-year average of 90.6,” said DTN Analyst Todd Hultman. “This report should be viewed as bearish for corn as Monday's uncommonly high crop rating continues to point to a record harvest.”
Soybeans were 45{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} dropping leaves and 3{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} harvested compared to five-year averages of 53{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} and 8{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48}. Soybean condition worsened slightly.
“USDA's good-to-excellent rating of 71{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} reduced the DTN Soybean Condition Index from 178 to 173, which is still far above 120 from a year ago and the five-year average of 120.7. Monday's report should be viewed as neutral to bearish as the crop rating remains exceptionally high for this late in the season,” said Hultman.
In the southeastern corner of Indiana, Gerald Gauck said he started combining soybeans Sept. 18. “They were 13.5 moisture and made between 62 and 67 bushels per acre,” he wrote in an email to DTN. Those numbers were from two different fields and he hopes to harvest quite a few acres this week.
Spring wheat harvest progressed 12 percentage points from last week to 86{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} complete. That compares to a 92{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} five-year average. Winter wheat is 25{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} planted, versus 12{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and a five-year average of 22{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48}.
“Monday's report should be viewed as neutral to bearish for wheat with the good pace of winter wheat planting emerging as a new factor,” Hultman said.
Oat and barley harvest are nearly complete. Sorghum is 30{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} harvested, compared to 28{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and a 29{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} five-year average.
Cotton is 8{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} harvested compared to 6{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and a 9{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} five-year average. Rice is 46{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} harvested compared to 36{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} last week and a 53{ba1edae1e6da4446a8482f505d60d3b8e379ff6dedafe596d9ba4611a4e33a48} five-year average.
