OMAHA (DTN) — For the third week in a row, the nation’s corn and soybean conditions declined on USDA’s weekly Crop Progress and Condition report. Corn in the very poor to poor category increased five percentage points to 14{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} and corn rated good-to-excellent dropped 7 percentage points to 56{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0}.

“Weekly crop conditions for corn dropped again, leading to a DTN Crop Condition Index of 135 points as compared to last week’s 154 points and last year’s 161 points,” said DTN Senior Analyst Darin Newsom. “By state, Illinois dropped 40 index points and Indiana dropped 41 index points.”

Ten percent of the corn crop is silking, compared to 5{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} last week and a 3{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} average. “This means the crop continues to mature during the worst of this year’s hot and dry weather conditions,” Newsom said.

Soybean conditions also plunged, with the percent of the crop rated very poor to poor increasing three percentage points to 15{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} and the portion of the crop rated good to excellent falling a like amount.

“Weekly crop conditions for soybeans led to a DTN Crop Condition Index of 127 points, down from last week’s 137 points and last year’s 158 points. The steady decline continues to indicate a less likely chance of the crop making trendline yield,” Newsom said.

Blooming came in at 12{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} as compared to the five-year average of 4{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0}, reflecting a crop that is maturing ahead of pace while weather conditions remain hot and dry.

The soybean crop is 12{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} bloomed, compared to 5{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} last week and a 4{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} average. “Blooming figures reflect a crop that is maturing ahead of pace while weather conditions remain hot and dry,” Newsom said.

Winter wheat harvest hit 59{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} this week, compared to 48{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} last week and a five-year average of 27{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0}. Newsom pointed out Kansas is 96{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} complete compared to its normal pace of 28{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} harvested.

Spring wheat is 57{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} headed compared to 33{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} last week and an 18{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} average. “Weekly crop conditions for spring wheat increased slightly,” Newsom said, “putting the DTN Crop Condition Index at 184 points as compared to last week’s 183 points and last year’s 173 points.”
