The latest round of state crop progress reports came out from the USDA's National Ag Statistics Service offices on Monday. As spring progress continues, the numbers also repeated the tale of a worsening winter wheat crop condition-wise.
Spring wheat, on a national level, is 49{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} planted compared to 24{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} last week and a 48{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} five-year average.
Winter wheat condition ratings decreased again. It's now considered to be 44{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} poor-to-very poor. That's a slight decrease in the last week. Twenty-nine percent of the winter wheat nationally is rated at being in good-to-excellent condition.
Corn planting edged close to three-quarters of the way complete nationwide in the week ended May 18, according to USDA's weekly Crop Progress report. At 73{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e}, progress is only three percentage points behind the five-year average.

Ahead of average is the amount of the crop that has already emerged. At 36{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e}, that's ahead of 2013's 17{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} and the average of 31{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e}. In Wyoming, spring wheat planting continues to be ahead of average. At 74{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e}, it's 33{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} ahead of last year and 12{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} ahead of the five-year average. North Dakota spring wheat planting is moving along but, at 25{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} complete as of Sunday, it's behind last year's 47{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e} and the average of 55{0a3336b3da8cf935de4f3eb78fe29508c4b8b5ebd27d01af2d815614325d533e}.
