Crow Chief Plenty Coups (1848-1932) is credited with keeping his tribe’s customs and spiritual beliefs alive as he helped his people, reluctantly, make the difficult transition from their traditional life to reservation life. His wisdom and leadership are still admired by his tribe and other Montanans alike.
This photo was taken in 1928 at the dedication of the Chief Plenty Coups Memorial State Monument. now part of the Chief Plenty Coups State Park located on the Crow Reservation about 40 minutes south of Billings. Plenty Coup’s home and a museum are located at this park. Consider a visit on your summer travels this year.
