9:00 PM Update:
BILLINGS –Heavy winds challenged firefighters in putting out a fire at the Billings Public Auction Yards.
The fire started outside in the middle of where some of the cattle are fed, a little before 7 PM Friday night at 1800 Minnesota Avenue.
Crews had the fire under control by 8 PM.
Some of the cattle had to be moved, according to Battalion Chief Terry Larson.
Two fire trucks and a water tender responded.
Firefighters sprayed water on the flames and then the wind spread it south to another part of the yards.
One of the fire trucks then came into the lot from the other side.
Some of the ranchers at PAYS put out some of the hot spots.
Larson says there's a lot of metal and concrete in the auction yards…so there was not a lot of damage.
He says wind and access were the big challenges for firefighters.
It's not know what caused the fire or how much burned.
Larson did not mention any injuries to people or the cattle.
