Fort Peck Dam in northeastern Montana was the first major flood control project on the Mighty Missouri River. In 1935 when this photo was taken construction of the head walls for the dam was in full swing. The project provided hundreds of needed jobs during the Great Depression and had a major impact on the development of eastern Montana. Dozens of people were seriously injured or killed during the construction of the dam. The project received national attention, and was on the first cover of Life Magazine. The water backed up by the huge dam wiped out farms, ranches and even some towns. But there stories are still alive in the collection of the Montana Historical Society.
