MONTE VISTA – An accused drunk driver plowed through a herd of sheep in the San Luis Valley and kept on driving.

Troopers responded to the crash at 6:42 p.m Tuesday to find dozens of dead sheep on Rio Grande CR 8, about eight miles southeast of Monte Vista. They also found a detached license plate, which led them them to 47-year-old Lynn Ann Michel within 30 minutes.

Colorado State Patrol Captain George Dingfelder says investigators are trying to determine how Michel managed to kill 38 sheep, injure 12 others, and still manage to drive from the scene in her 2005 Isuzu SUV.

Dingfelder noted that in a 2009 crash, a dump truck plowed into a herd of 1,300 sheep in the same area and only killed 24. The driver in the 2009 crash told troopers he did not see the sheep, according to an account in the Pueblo Chieftain.

Michel, who lives in Monte Vista, was arrested for DUI, driving without insurance and failing to remain at the scene of a property-damage crash.
