Montana and North Dakota Start Harvesting Wheat!


Corn and soybean condition ratings continued their downtrend in Monday’s USDA Crop Progress report.  A whopping 38{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} of the U.S. corn crop is now rated at poor-to-very-poor.  That’s up 8{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} from last week.  The top end of the crop, at 31{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} good-to-excellent, is down from last week’s 40{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107}.

Soybeans are also seeing the decline with 30{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} rated poor-to-very-poor compared to last week’s 27{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107}.

With condition ratings dropping for corn and beans, 65{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} of the U.S. spring wheat crop is still rated good-to-excellent.  That’s dropped a percentage point in the past week and compares to the 73{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} good-to-excellent rating at this time last year.

We are seeing the winter wheat harvest across the U.S. on the downward slide.  As of this past Sunday, 80{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} of that crop had been harvested.  That compares to 64{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} at this time last year and the five-year average of 65{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107}.

On a local level…

In Montana, harvest of winter wheat has begun early with 3{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} complete as of this past Sunday.  Seventy percent of winter wheat, 16{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} of spring wheat, 5{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} of durum wheat, and 37{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} of barley has turned.  Seven percent of dry peas and lentils have been harvested.  See full report…

In North Dakota, the spring wheat harvest is now underway at 1{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} complete as of this past Sunday.  Fifty-four percent of the spring wheat, 17{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} of durum, and 64{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} of barley is turning.  Over half of the state’s dry edible peas are now mature with 2{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} harvested.  See full report…

In South Dakota, 82{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} of winter wheat has now been harvested.  That’s compared to just 1{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} at this time last year and the five-year average of 15{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107}.  Twelve percent of spring wheat has been harvested.  Fifty-six percent of barley is ripe and, as of this past Sunday, 2{6b02cb02835b82b7f756ddf6717aaab7139b350de274ea97f5b53eb230607107} of the crop had been harvested.  See full report…
