A proposal to establish a checkoff program for Montana canola growers has failed. The referendum, which called for a $0.10 per hundredweight assessment at the first point of sale beginning October 15, 2025, was defeated by a vote of 47 “no” to 29 “yes.”
Paper ballots were mailed to 209 eligible canola producers in late July, with an August 15 deadline for returns. A total of 76 ballots were submitted, marking a 36 percent participation rate.
With the defeat, the Montana Canola Advisory Committee has been dissolved effective August 29.
Supporters expressed disappointment but emphasized canola’s potential role in Montana crop diversity and future oilseed market opportunities.
