The following is a portion of Jay’s obituary from the Billings Gazette:
A cowboy to the core, fourth-generation Billings-area rancher and former Montana legislator Jay O. Stovall died Thursday night surrounded by family at a Billings hospital after an illness. He was 71.
“We were fortunate to give him one last ride to the ranch. It was a really, really happy time,” said Turk Stovall, 35, the youngest of Stovall’s three children. “I think any cowboy would like to have one last look at their cattle.”
A funeral service for Stovall, of Pryor, will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 23 at First Presbyterian Church, 13th Street West and Poly Drive, in Billings. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with a reception at the Elks Lodge.
Turk Stovall said his father was a family man and businessman who loved ranching, cattle and horses and “all the people involved.”
Being a good neighbor was important to him, Turk Stovall said. “He was a man of his word … a cowboy’s cowboy,” he said.
