Northern Plains Annual Meeting, Billings MT

Author, soil advocate to be keynote speaker at Northern Plains Annual Meeting Nov. 14

Author and healthy-soil advocate Kristin Ohlson will deliver the keynote speech on Nov. 14 at Northern Plains Resource Council’s 44th Annual Meeting in Billings.

Ohlson’s 2014 book, “The Soil Will Save Us: How Scientists, Farmers, and Foodies Are Healing the Soil to Save the Planet,” has received wide attention. Michael Ruhlman, author of “The Soul of a Chef,” wrote, “Ohlson conveys her information in the lively manner of writers such as Michel Pollan and Rowan Jacobsen, making complicated ideas easily accessible to the reader, so that we see the ground at our feet not as dead dirt but rather as, in her words, a ‘coral reef’ teeming with life, a ‘massive biological machine’ on which the health of our species depends. We’re lucky to have this account.”

A freelance journalist, author, essayist, and writer of fiction, Ohlson’s work has appeared in the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Utne Reader, Salon, Smithsonian, Discover, New Scientist, Gourmet, Eating Well, Experience Life, Entrepreneur, Preservation, American Archaeology, Ms, Oprah, More, Poets & Writers, Tin House, the Cleveland Plain Dealer,  and more.

Her work has also appeared in anthologies of “Best American Science Writing, 2011” and “Best American Travel Writing, 2008.” Her book “Stalking the Divine” won the American Society of Journalists and Authors Best Nonfiction Book Award in 2004.

This year, Northern Plains has invested new energy into learning about the wonders of soil and its role in healthy farms and carbon reduction. We’re pleased to host Kristin Ohlson on Saturday morning, November 14 just before the luncheon. The public is welcome; a small entrance fee is charged to attend the speech.

The Annual Meeting at the Billings Crowne Plaza also will feature speakers who will address radioactive oilfield waste, coal exports and the Tongue River Railroad, and rural electric co-ops. A silent auction, Cowboy Supper, meals featuring local foods, and live music by Ellen and the Old School will top out activities.

For information on attending this speech or other parts of Northern Plains’ Annual Meeting, call (406) 248-1154 or visit (click on “Annual Meeting”).
