Send a Horse to College

POWELL, Wyoming — Northwest College is opening its doors to horses. Rik Mettes, the NWC farrier and blacksmithing instructor, said the NWC Farrier Science Program welcomes horses in need of hoof care. His program offers an opportunity for horse owners to provide for their animals’ hoof health while helping his farrier students perfect their skills.

Mettes oversees all student work and focuses on quality shoeing. The service isn’t limited to healthy animals. Mettes encourages people to bring their horses with lameness or gait problems for his advanced students to work on.

A small fee is charged to help cover expenses. Trimming costs $7 and shoeing $20. Free overnight stabling is available. Feed and water are provided as necessary.

To arrange shoeing services, or for more information, stop by the Northwest College Equine Center, or contact Mettes, 307-754-6466 or, and leave a detailed message.
