Top 100 Seedstock Operations

Beef magazine recently released it’s Seedstock 100, a listing of the biggest seedstock producers in the beef industry by number of bulls marketed in 2017.

We’re fortunate to have so many great seedstock operations in our part of the world. 35 of those top 100 operations are located in Northern Ag Network Country. With 17 in Montana, 12 in South Dakota, 4 in Wyoming and 2 in North Dakota.

Beef magazine estimates that these 100 operations supply 17-20{ff5548eb8b7551781742a29b9864cd1703b3791f37ac9790ae42b0c6a6bb7d63} of the bulls that breed the nation’s cowherd. These operations marketed over 56,000 bulls in 2017, 3.24{ff5548eb8b7551781742a29b9864cd1703b3791f37ac9790ae42b0c6a6bb7d63} more than last year and 27{ff5548eb8b7551781742a29b9864cd1703b3791f37ac9790ae42b0c6a6bb7d63} more than in 2014.

The top 100 operations marketed 32 different breeds and composites last year, although the majority focused on 6 breeds. 75{ff5548eb8b7551781742a29b9864cd1703b3791f37ac9790ae42b0c6a6bb7d63} of the operations offered Angus cattle, 20{ff5548eb8b7551781742a29b9864cd1703b3791f37ac9790ae42b0c6a6bb7d63} red angus, 16{ff5548eb8b7551781742a29b9864cd1703b3791f37ac9790ae42b0c6a6bb7d63} Hereford, 12{ff5548eb8b7551781742a29b9864cd1703b3791f37ac9790ae42b0c6a6bb7d63} Charolais and sim-angus and 7{ff5548eb8b7551781742a29b9864cd1703b3791f37ac9790ae42b0c6a6bb7d63} Simmental.
