USMCA Clears The House In A Landslide Vote

by

Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement 385-41. The vote comes less than 24 hours after democrats voted to impeach President Donald Trump.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the USMCA.

“I’ve long said that support for USMCA crosses political parties, the bipartisan passage of the agreement today is proof of that,” Secretary Perdue said. “I am pleased the House finally brought this agreement to a vote and encourage quick passage in the Senate. President Trump delivered on his promise to replace NAFTA and USMCA is a huge success for America’s farmers and ranchers. This agreement will unleash the bounty of America’s agricultural harvest to two of our largest trading partners in the world and it is critical to the success of rural America.”

USMCA will advance United States agricultural interests in two of the most important markets for American farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses. This high-standard agreement builds upon our existing markets to expand United States food and agricultural exports and support food processing and rural jobs.

National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) President Jennifer Houston hailed the passage saying, “Today was a crucial win for all U.S. beef producers and a reassurance that U.S. beef will continue to have duty-free access to Canada and Mexico,” said Houston. “A big thank-you goes to the Trump Administration and every lawmaker who voted to approve USMCA. Of course, there is still more work left to do, so I urge the Senate to swiftly pass the USMCA and send it to the President’s desk.”

As you can imagine, her request for a swift senate vote will be a tough feat after the house passed two articles of impeachment against the president of the United States. Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell has also previously stated they will not look at the USMCA bill until next year.
