OMAHA (DTN) — The winter wheat harvest jumped 11 percentage points to 20{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} complete, well above last year’s 7{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} and the average pace of 3{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0}, according to USDA’s latest weekly Crop Progress report.
The harvest pace could pick up even more momentum this week as above-average temperatures and a lack of rain are expected for the Southern Plains. That rapid progress makes this week’s report bearish for wheat, DTN Analyst John Sanow said.
Meanwhile, DTN’s Corn Condition Index, which is based on USDA’s numbers, increased 2 points to 176 points from last week with the 2 percentage points of the good moving into the excellent category. This remains above the 2004 index of 167 points and the 2009 index at 172 points at the same point in the growing season, Sanow said.
“Traders were anticipating a decline this week, though the market may not pay attention given the disappointing rain totals for the driest portions of the Corn Belt last week and a lack of precipitation in the forecast for the next seven days,” Sanow said.
Corn was 97{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} emerged by the end of the week, compared to last year’s emergence of 75{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0}, and the five-year average of 83{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0}.
“Soybean planting progress came in at 94{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0}, meaning things should be wrapped up come next week’s report,” according to Sanow.
Emergence is at 79{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0}, well above last year’s 39{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} and the average pace of 50{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0}.
The first DTN Soybean Condition Index came in at 162 points with 65{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} of the crop rated good to excellent.
Sanow noted: “As with corn, traders are likely to pay attention more to the lack of rain last week and the seven-day forecast calling for above-average temperatures in the Southern Plains and the lack of moisture over areas needing it the most in the Corn Belt.”
The DTN Hard Red Spring Condition Index dropped 2 index points from last week to 187 points while 3{fd15d42d1b024b97d6d50958be27cc8145b6addb99e015780abccf2984117bb0} of the crop is headed.
“This report should be considered neutral,” Sanow said, “with the market paying little attention.”

Extreme heat early in the week gave way to cooler temperatures and much-needed rain showers. Nebraska
Showers brought moisture to eastern portions of the state, while the dry west saw conditions continue to decline, according to the NASS Nebraska Field Office. However, below-normal temperatures and less wind reduced stress on crops. Temperatures averaged slightly below normal in the western third of the state and 4 to 7 degrees below normal in the eastern two-thirds. Hail damaged crops and property in areas of the state.
