Wolves have been gone from Colorado since the 1940’s but last week that state reintroduced the large predators onto its landscape after Colorado voters passed a ballot initiative to do so in 2020.
Ranchers in the state are worried about wolves killing their livestock and the effect on their livelihood. Groups representing cattle producers lost an appeal against wolf reintroduction in federal court this month. District court judge Regina Rodriquez said compensation from the Colorado parks and wildlife commission would prevent ranchers from suffering “irreparable harm” from economic losses thanks to wolf predation.
Wolves reintroduced from Colorado came from Oregon, where livestock predation by the predators has been an issue.
The 261-page Colorado Wolf Restoration and Management Plan describes exactly how the voter mandate will be achieved, to restore the gray wolf to the state.
