May Day in Not Too Distant Times

by

Some still celebrate May Day by leaving May Day baskets adorned with flowers at the doors of friends and family. The coming of spring and new life returning to the land has been celebrated in many ways over the centuries. In 1916 when this photo was taken in front of the still new State Capitol in Helena, hundreds turned out to celebrate in grand fashion. It is not known what was in the steaming bowls being heralded by celebrants, but the dainty “flowers” scattered about the lawn look happy in the sun. The Montana Historical Society wishes you Happy May Day from our state’s past.

Northern Ag Network Note: Our state's capitol building was finished in 1902, but soon to be outgrown. Between 1909 and 1912 new wings were added to both sides of the capitol.

1916 was the year that our admired Jeanette Rankin was the first woman elected to the US House of Representatives.
