Montana FWP Looks to Buy $4M “Whitetail Prairie”

Public comments are now being taken as agency contemplates buying 2,840 acres for $4,075,000.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has now proposed the purchase by fee title a 2,840-acre property known as “Whitetail Prairie.”  The agency would be purchasing the land for its appraised vallue of $4,075,000.  That comes to just over $1,434/acre.

According to FWP, they plan to “use a combination of FWP Habitat Montana Program (1/4) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Pittman Robertson dollars (3/4) to fund the purchase.”

A public meeting on the proposed conservation easement will be held at the Wolf Creek School, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.

A draft EA on the proposal is available for public viewing and comments on the FWP website at fwp.mt.gov click public notices.

Comments may be submitted via the FWP website, emailed to fwprg42@mt.gov  or mailed to: FWP, Attn: Whitetail Prairie Acquisition, 4600 Giant Springs Road, Great Falls, MT 59405. The comment deadline is 5 p.m., Nov. 4.
