NILE Adds New Meat Evaluation and Veterinary Science Contests

by Colter Brown

Following an overwhelming but successful 2022, the NILE is adding more FFA/4-H contests for youth this fall.

A Veterinary Science contest for FFA members will take place Monday, October 16th beginning at 3 p.m.. The purpose of the Veterinary Science CDE is to provide students with opportunities to develop technical knowledge and demonstrate practical skills in the field of veterinary science. Open to the first 32 teams to register (one team per chapter). The NILE is looking forward to the addition of this contest this fall. If you are a business and would like to sponsor this contest, please reach out to Shelby Shaw.

After much anticipation, the NILE will also host a Meat Evaluation Contest open to both 4-H and FFA members on Tuesday, October 17th. This contest is made possible by the Montana Meat Processors Association. The purpose of the Meat Evaluation Contest is to develop students’ abilities to evaluate meat animal products in order to optimize economic returns to producers and industry as well as to meet the needs of the consumer. Students will learn analytical skills, critical thinking strategies, cooperation, communication skills and understanding of appropriate meat terminology.

This contest is also open to the first 32 teams to register for the contest.

Registration for all contests will open in late August through Judging Card.

Returning 4-H/FFA Contests this fall are Livestock Evaluation, Sales & Service and Horse Evaluation. Scheduling changes have allowed the move of the Horse Evaluation Contest to Tuesday, October 17th, where the judging will take place in the First Interstate Arena.

The Livestock Evaluation Contest will see a couple format changes this fall. The biggest change will be oral reasons will now be given at the end of the contest. Classes will be judged in rotations (12 minutes/rotation), participants will eat lunch, oral reasons will be given and the contest will conclude with officials.
