POWELL, Wyo. — A roundup of wild horses in the Pryor Mountains of northern Wyoming may begin as early as next week.

The last horse gather from the area occurred in 2009, when 57 horses were removed.

The Bureau of Land Management is planning to gather around 40 mustangs this year to keep the population at the appropriate management level of 90-120 horses.

BLM spokeswoman Kristen Lenhardt tells the Powell Tribune (http://bit.ly/LGgklR ) that there are about 175 adult horses in the 38,000 acre range.

The bureau is targeting 1- to 3-year-old horses and plans to trap horses in special pens.

The BLM will offer the captured horses for adoption.
