Northen Livestock Video Auction Recap:
Market activity was moderate on all calves on offer. Demand for spring born feeders was light to moderate, with moderate to good demand seen for weaned calves and offerings over 600 lbs.
Demand for yearling cattle was light to moderate on light offerings. Buyers were more reserved this sale compared to last month as market conditions refuse to show any new life. CME positions are lower than last month, when feeder cattle contract prices were in the mid to low 140's, as compared to the low to mid 130's where we are today. Buyers continue to show more demand for heavier weight calves weighing over 600 lbs as the April CME position continues to hold a strong $6.50 premium to June board.
Demand for replacement heifers was strong again this sale as several long strings of heifers outsold steers. Furthermore, strong premiums were seen for weaned calves, as buyers purchased these offerings hoping to hit the April live cattle contract marketing time frame. Vaccinations, as well as, delivery location were also important this sale as premiums were given for both.
Bred replacement stock sold on mostly light demand for moderate offerings. Buyers were very reserved as they bid on all bred stock. Quality was very good throughout the sale.
Spring born lamb offerings were moderate and sold on mostly moderate demand. Market activity for lambs was active to very active, with the phone bank nearly full throughout the sale and buyers actively bidding on the internet as well. 80-99 lbs lambs sold mostly 2.00-3.00 lower than last sale while 100-110 lbs lambs sold firm.
Value Added lots are those cattle that are All Natural or Non Hormone treated cattle (NHTC). Prices are fob with a 20-25 cent slide for calves under 500 lbs, mostly a 8-20 cent slide for calves 500-700, and a 6-8 cent slide was seen on most yearlings. A 2-3 percent pencil shrink or equivalent was seen for most yearling lots, while most calf offerings offered a 1-2 percent shrink, with some offerings weighed on the ground straight.
Supply included 60 percent steers and 40 percent heifers. 97 percent of the offering was from the Northcentral Region and mostly from Montana.
25 percent of the sales over 600 lbs.
