Stockmen’s Association Feeder Council to host Beyond the Bunk Workshop

The North Dakota Stockmen's Association (NDSA) Feeder Council will host its 2016 Beyond the Bunk Workshop Dec. 14 at the Ramada Bismarck Hotel and Conference Center in Bismarck, N.D.
 
The workshop begins at 10 a.m. and includes discussions detailing North Dakota State University feedlot research; proper starter programs for cattle going on feed; control points for reducing shrink, limiting variability and improving overall efficiency in the feedlot; the benefits of prebiotic and probiotic products for feeder cattle; key management aspects for getting the most out of silage; and the use of ractopamine hydrochloride in the production system.
 
NDSA Vice President Dan Rorvig will open the meeting with a welcome and issues briefing.
 
Dr. Uchenna Anele, North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension animal scientist, and Chanda Engel, NDSU Extension research specialist at the Carrington Research and Extension Center, will highlight several ongoing research projects within the NDSU feedlot research program.
 
Dr. Chad Zehnder, a Purina Animal Health cattle consultant, will discuss the use of proper starter programs to promote successful receiving periods and influence cattle performance through the feeding period.
 
Tyler Melroe, beef nutrition specialist at Hubbard Feeds, will evaluate the control points that reduce shrink, limit variability and improve the overall efficiency of feeder cattle.
 
Dr. Twig Marston, technical sales field manager for BioZyme, Inc., will highlight several prebiotic and probiotic products that can enhance cattle performance. He will provide details on the use of direct-fed microbial feed additives and their effect on animal performance.
 
Dr. Renato Schmidt, forage products specialist at Lallemand Animal Nutrition, will focus on management keys to get the most out of the ensiling process to maximize the recovery of nutrients and dry matter. He will also provide an update on recent silage microbiology and management research.
 
Dr. Mallorie Wilken, beef technical consultant at Elanco Animal Health, will explore the use of ractopamine hydrochloride in the production system and highlight product research conducted since its approval.
