Who’s Done Planting Wheat and Harvesting Beets?

by

As the days of October whiz by and that nip of winter becomes ever more present in the fall air, our region’s winter wheat planting is also waning.  While progress has been made in the fields, the condition ratings are varied across the region.  The following numbers come from the latest crop progress reports from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service field offices.

In Montana, 91{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} of the crop has now been planted.  This is just slightly behind the 5-year average and where we were last year.  However, only 54{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} of the crop has emerged which is 20{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} less than this time last year.  The crop is rated 41{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} good-to-excellent which is substantially behind last year’s 78{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} and the five-year average of 56{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e}.  See more…

All of Wyoming’s winter wheat is in the ground.  100{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} of that crop is rated in good condition.  See more…

Ninety-five percent of South Dakota’s winter wheat has been seeded.  That’s only 2 percentage points behind average and the emergence at 86{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} is ahead of average.  Sixty-eight percent is rated good to excellent.  See more…

While there’s not much to talk of for winter wheat in North Dakota, 93{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} of the corn for silage has been chopped and 71{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} of all corn has been harvested.  That’s way ahead of last year’s 50{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} at this time and the five-year average of 31{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e}.  Forty percent of the corn crop has been harvested just in this past week.  See more…

And we can’t forget about the ongoing sugarbeet harvest!!  Sixty-six of Montana’s sugar beets are in.  This is slightly above the five-year average and 7 percentage points behind last year.  In Wyoming, 57{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e} of sugarbeets have been harvested.  This is also slightly above the 5-year average but behind last year’s 70{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e}.  Nearly all, or 98{fe867fa2be02a5a45e8bbb747b653fe2e9d0331fd056b85cd0c1a3542435a96e}, of North Dakota’s sugarbeets have been lifted.  This is down one percentage point from last year but nine points ahead of the five-year average.
