Wyoming Farm Bureau members helping families in need

by

Wyoming families facing hunger received a boost mid-November with the Wyoming Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmer & Rancher (YF&R) Committee “Harvest for All” project.  The annual food and fund drive to benefit Feeding America food bank affiliates in Wyoming raised the equivalent of 6,503 meals for Wyoming families.

The 2014 “Harvest for All” project benefited the Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies (WFBR) based in Casper and the Salvation Army in Sheridan.

During the state annual meeting Nov. 13-15, 2014 in Sheridan, Wyo. Farm Bureau members participated in the food and fund drive.  County Farm Bureaus and individual members from across the state donated food and money to help the food banks in their work with hunger-relief programs across the state of Wyoming.  A quilt raffle also helped raised funds for the Harvest for All project.  Lincoln County Farm Bureau member Iris Jasperson made and donated a handmade quilt.

Carbon County Rancher Chalsey Kortes chairs the sub-committee that oversees the “Harvest for All” project.  According to Kortes, the project was a success thanks to the contributions of Farm Bureau members.  “Through the “Harvest for All” fundraiser, Farm Bureau was able to help put food on fellow Wyomingite’s tables,” Kortes said.

The Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies was the recipient of $1,563 in monetary donations which is equivalent to 6,252 meals.

The Salvation Army in Sheridan received 40 pounds of food and a $50 monetary donation which is equivalent to 251 meals.

The WyFB Young Farmer & Rancher Committee is in its twelfth year of joining with the American Farm Bureau Federation YF&R Committee in what is called a “Harvest for All.”  Throughout the program’s twelve year span, the WyFB YF&R Committee has partnered with Farm Bureau members to raise 5,634 pounds of food, $13,099 and 74 man hours of volunteer time to help those facing hunger in Wyoming.
