During the Public Lands Council (PLC) annual meeting earlier this month, the Public Lands Endowment Trust approved project funding for the first time since it was established. The American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) is pleased to be the recipient of one of the first grants.
“ASI, national member of PLC, applauds the organization for approving funding for Bighorn and Domestic Sheep Interface Risk Analysis: Public Land Grazing and Comparative Immune System Investigation,” said Peter Orwick, ASI executive director. “This research project is critical to resolving the conflict that threatens grazing for 20 percent of the entire sheep industry.”
The mission of the trust is to protect, enhance and preserve multiple uses of public lands, including the livestock grazing industry's use of those lands.
“We know there was a lot of competition for a limited amount of funding this first year of the trust,” said Margaret Soulen Hinson, ASI president, “and the support on this sheep industry priority is greatly appreciated. We look forward to working together on this groundbreaking research and securing the much needed answers to resolve this conflict.”
ASI provided $50,000 to initiate the research project earlier this year with plans to match funding in years two and three. The research is in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's, Animal Research Services, Animal Disease Research Unit in Pullman, Wash., and the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho.
