Hopping into Summer Solstice with Grasshoppers!

by

What does our summer have in store for grasshoppers?  The hazard maps below, based on adult populations in 2011, show that much of our region is at risk of a pretty intense infestation.

After 2011 saw a long winter, wet spring, and late summer, speculation has been circling about what this year may have in store for the region’s grasshopper population.  Thoughts were that 2011 would have been the peak, but the weather never fully brought those thoughts to fruition.

There is still a lot to be seen, but grasshoppers are sprouting up around the region.  We’ve been told again and again that early control is the best way to get a handle on the pests.  For more information on what the specialists recommend, visit this USDA Agricultural Research Service website.
