Montana Department of Agriculture Reminds Canola Producers to Submit Checkoff Referendum Ballots

by Colton Young

HELENA, Mont.
– In cooperation with a producer-driven advisory committee, the Montana Department of Agriculture has sent paper ballots to known Montana canola growers to voice their opinion on the establishment of a $0.10 per hundredweight ($0.05 per bushel) checkoff program.

The proposed checkoff is both voluntary and refundable. The estimated revenue based on current production figures will be approximately $265,000 annually. Funds will be used exclusively to support efforts to help grow the canola industry and fund Montana-specific research projects.

Project funding decisions will be made by a five-member grower committee, supported by advisors from Montana State University, the Montana Department of Agriculture, and the canola industry.  Public participation is always welcome.

If you are a current canola grower and would like to receive a ballot, you may provide your mailing address to the Department by contacting Logan Kruse at logan.kruse@mt.gov.

Return ballots are due back to the Department by August 15, 2025.
