Petition to Force Farm Bill Vote Shows up in House

The following article is from the NAFB News Service:

Congress returned back from its August recess last week – but the Senate will go back home on Thursday. The House is schedule to be in session Wednesday through Friday – but with the Senate gone – some think House members will follow suit – not returning until after the November election – which would make it difficult to get the farm bill on the House floor for a vote. However – 51 representatives have now signed the discharge petition initiated by Iowa Representative Bruce Braley last week (September 13th) to take the farm bill to the House floor. In order for the House leadership to bring up the legislation for consideration – a majority of House members would have to sign the petition. American Soybean Association President Steve Wellman says farmers have been told they haven’t expressed enough concern about the lack of new farm legislation and that there isn’t enough time to pass the bill. If it takes this petition to pass a full, five-year farm bill through the House before the end of the month – then Wellman says ASA is behind it and they encourage every House member with a stake in ensuring certainty for America’s farmers to sign it.
