The Cattle Industry’s Granddaddy of Performance Testing

by

It’s production sale season across the Rocky Mountain West and Northern Plains. Ranchers have done their homework and are traveling to their trusted source of cattle genetics to buy bulls and bred heifers that they hope will improve their own cattle herd genetics that will hopefully translate into more dollars in their pocket when it comes time to market their cattle.

In today’s purebred cattle industry, the Midland Bull Test near Columbus, MT is often referred to as the “Granddaddy of Performance Testing”. That’s because in 1962 Leo McDonnel, Sr. along with a small group of purebred cattle breeders decided to revolutionize the industry.

During the 2016 Midland Bull Test Sales, the Northern Ag Network’s Russell Nemetz talked with Leo McDonnel, Jr. about his father’s legacy.
