What’s for Dinner? The Turkey or the Chicken?

Mabel Williams seems to be deciding whether it will be chicken or turkey for dinner on a cold winter day on the eastern Montana plains. The photo was taken by her friend Evelyn Cameron in about 1911.

Mabel and her sister Janet are probably the most photographed solo women homesteaders in Montana thanks to their close friendship with neighbor Evelyn Cameron.  Janet, in particular, was considered a surrogate daughter to the childless Cameron.  In 1928, when Evelyn Cameron died, Janet inherited the Cameron ranch with all its contents including a cache of glass-plate negatives
